The Crow

The Crow is the final boss of the Ending B in Death's Gambit, located at the end of the Afterlife.

Death is the custodian of souls, ferrying them to the Afterlife. The soul energy he harvests is the very lifeforce that sustains his realm, and maintaining a balance between life and death is part of the divine order he is bound to.

The greatest threat to that balance is Thalamus. Where Thalamus attempts to interdict souls, Death protects them on their journey to the Afterlife.

Attacks

  • Crowflight. The Crow spreads his wings and beats backwards, before dashing towards Sorun with an arcing scythe attack. In Phase 2, The Crow slashes towards Sorun two times before performing this attack, and then additionally slashes behind himself at the end of his arc.
  • Crowslash. The Crow teleports to Sorun's side and slashes once. He repeats this two more times.
  • Reap. The Crow flies into the air while shouting a voiceline, before glowing yellow indicators appear on the ground where pillars of blue energy will soon erupt from.
  • Rise. Upon entering Phase 2, the Crow will fly into the air and become invulnerable. Soul Knights will begin spawning in this phase. He can will repeat this attack halfway through Phase 2.
  • Anima Drain. If Sorun has soul energy, the Crow will drain it and increase the damage to his attacks. If the soul bar underneath his health entirely fulls up, all of his attacks will begin to one shot Sorun. Shieldbreaking the Crow entirely will drain this bar if it is at its maximum value.
  • God of Death. Upon entering Phase 3, the Crow flies into the air as the arena shifts to a platform. Rings of omnidirectional bullets, alternating between fast moving and slow moving will begin to erupt from him.
  • Soulbirds. The Crow creates a portal that has damaging Soulbirds move out of it in a wave like pattern. After this, he will then follow it up with rings of circling Soulbirds, then a line of Soulbirds that create semistationary circles. During the last part of this attack, he will begin to dash across the screen, dealing damage to Sorun. These birds can be destroyed on hit. This attack only appears in Phase 3.

Heroic Attacks

  • Heroic Reap. The Crow flies into the air while shouting a voiceline, before glowing yellow indicators appear on the ground where pillars of blue energy will soon erupt from. These pillars additionaly create projectiles that rise up from their base.
  • Shadow of Death. The Crow creates a shadow duplicate of himself, who repeats his Crowflight and Crowslash attack on a slight delay. It does not repeat the additional attacks from Crowflight in Phase 2.
  • Heroic Rise. Upon entering Phase 2, the Crow will fly into the air and become invulnerable. Soul Knights will begin spawning in this phase, along with purple birds that erupt into bombs when above Sorun. At the end of this attack, two Valkyrie's will spawn. He will repeat this attack halfway through Phase 2. The second time this attack is performed, an orb spawns with a yellow gauge above its head. The orb has the twoattacks.

    • Soulfire Birds. The Orb covers the arena floor in blue flames, while two portals with divebombing Soulbirds open up and move towards the top of the Orb.

the real problem with him is when he uses the scythe quick slash. Almost unavoidable, and if he stole your soul energy, he ohok you in a blink of an eye. Parry his dive attack, perfect block his double spin, and always use your skills in order to not let him siphon too much energy. Grab fortitude with the invincibility talent from soldier's skill tree in case he's amped up, also comes in handy if you want to deal with the greenish floating orb. Whenhe summons his minions, prioritize the mosquitoes.

This boss was the first one, that pushed me to change my play-game. But I did it almost easy after that: Skybreaker sword as secondary + Inquisitor Halberd as main weapon + aura "the wings of the exiled" + Heroic Lunge skill + Sky Crash skill... All that give me opportunity to attack him not even touching the ground(spinning in the air with Halberd and infinite jumping) and throw excess of souls with skills and sword's skill(giant spirit that make soul energy explosions).

I beat him on heroic by not playing around his soul absorb mechanic. During second phase if you deal high enough damage he won't have time to use melee attacks and you'll go into third phase where you unfortunately have to face being one shot. I used Divine Force to give myself a second chance in case I missed a perfect block and just burned him with the help of Soul Trigger.

I also failed an attempt trying to combinate Soul Trigger and Grimgaud's Brew because my stamina regen was too low but it can probably be countered by putting enough point in the stamina regen increase talent.

A strategy I found to work for the fight goes like this (Note:Only works if you have top line of talents from soldier tree)
Be sure to have at least 1 skill with a short cooldown and moderate cost, he will only use the drain when you are at or above 40 SE. Fortitude also helps to destroy death orb faster.
When he does his rise attack you want to be between the pillar right below and beside him, after the first one appears do a jump attack and you can get a few hits in.
For the reap you want to try and parry him when he dashes at you which will despawn the clone.
Crowslash perfect block the first Strike of each volley and keep holding block for the clones.
Death orb ring attacks just keep blocking the orbs and for the fire you can block that too just attack it as much as possible.
As for the final stage with the birds just try to find the gaps you can safely follow and take out the bugs that fly by before they drop the orbs.

This boss annoys me so much, the only Heroic I haven’t killed cause it’s just rng. It has so much potential to be fun, but the fact that it uses the soul drain whenever it wants instead of at fixed intervals between patterns or phases in the fight means that instead of making it a fun fight with careful resource management and play style, it just turns out to be miserable. Just hoping it doesn’t use the move that punishes you for trying to even damage it isn’t fun, such a poor choice on the developers part.
