Avatar of Thalamus

The Avatar of Thalamus is the final boss of the true ending in Death's Gambit, located at the end of the Collapsing Nightmare.

A soul binding God that feeds off its victim's trauma. Those under Thalamus' spell are doomed to relive their greatest regret over and over. Not even the most resilient minds can withstand this onslaught of nightmares for long.

While the victim's soul is transported to Y'lnoth, their body is left behind, asleep in their original plane. Mortal hosts starve to death within a few days, hence why Thalamus must be so obsessed with immortals.

Avatar of Thalamus

Attacks

  • Souls. Throughout the fight, small blue souls will appear on the floor. Touching them will heal Sorun.
  • Retaliation. Whenever Perfect Blocked or Parried, Thalamus will retaliate by sending three bombs out of himself, but also some souls.
  • Extinction Slash. Thalamus appears above the arena, slashing two bone scythes out and covering the arena.
  • Blood Portal. Thalamus creates a portal at an angle to Sorun, which will soon fire a beam of blood energy.
  • Bone Slash. Thalamus appears in-front of Sorun, slashing upwards and bringing his slash behind himself.
  • Bone Stab. Thalamus stabs towards Sorun once, then shifts his arm into a much larger version that stabs towards Sorun again. A portal opens to the side of Sorun, then slashes up towards him, before finally Thalamus performs the Bone Slash attack.
  • Blood Slash. Thalamus creates two red portals that slash out two massive appendages down towards Sorun.
  • Blood Spirits. Thalamus disappears, and blood portals begin to appear above Sorun. Red ghosts begin to swarm Sorun, exploding on contact and dropping bombs when they die.
  • Fire Rain. Thalamus teleports above the arena and begins creating flaming orbs that shoot towards the arena. On impact, they erupt into a spray of either purple projectiles in a star shape pattern, or a circle of flaming projectiles. The red ghosts from the Blood Spirit attack will begin swarming during this phase. He will then follow this up with a massive fire orb, that will instantly kill Sorun. It cannot be blocked, but it can be rolled through. He will not do this attack below 70% health.
  • Cosmic Crawl. Thalamus disappears from the background, as apparitions of the Avatar of Thalamus begin to swirl around the screen. Thalamus begins slashing towards Sorun at an angle during this phase. Spirits spawn during this attack.
  • Wraith Scream. Thalamus creates a square of purple circles that have rapidly depleting yellow gauges. The circles must be stood within, or they explode, damaging the entire arena. These circles form throughout other phases, as well.
  • Ghostfire Orbs. Thalamus creates white orbs. They will soon explode, then cover the arena floor in highly damaging white flames.
  • Screensplit. Thalamus splinters the creen into five noncontinuous slices.
  • Bonesprint. Thalamus' shoulder bone becomes much larger, and he sprints across the arena, dealing damage and leaving bombs in his wake.
  • Grab. Thalamus sprints towards Sorun, grabbing him if not dodged. Endless will then break Sorun out of this grab.
  • Power of a God. Upon reaching phase two, Thalamus will perform this attack. He shifts into a eye with a mouth around it, with swirling projectiles moving quickly towards the center of his eye. After this, ghostly enemies begin to form and fly towards Sorun, leaving bombs in their wake and dealing massive damage on contact. On low health, this attack shoots out omnidirectional projectiles from the center of his eye.
  • Shadow Sorun. Thalamus summons two Shadow Soruns to attack Sorun.
  • Empowered By Many Souls. After defeating Thalamus, a cutscene will begin. After this cutscene plays, Sorun will have to fight him again with the aid of Endless, Ione, and Vrael. Sorun is unable to take damage during this fight.

Heroic Attacks

  • Healing Memory Stolen. Sorun is unable to use Phoenix Plumes during the fight with Heroic Thalamus.
  • Illusions. Throughout the fight, Thalamus summons one of the following enemies.
    • Bysurge x2.
    • Bulwark of Aldwynn x1.
    • Soul of the Phoenix x1.
    • Wraith King Sirad x2.
  • Heroic Souls. Souls that drop during this fight heal for a small amount or heal for a bit more and give Sorun invincibility (for 3 seconds). There is a visual difference between the ones that only heal and the ones that provide invulnerability.
  • Ash. Thalamus summons Ash, who fires a barrage of projectiles towards Sorun.
  • Heroic Fire Rain. The red ghosts tend to drop Souls, which provide temporary invulnerability. He will then follow this up with a massive fire orb, that deals 1000 points of damage. It cannot be blocked, but it can be rolled through. When below 50% HP, the ghosts no longer spawn, when Thalamus does this attack.
  • Heroic Power of a God.  Upon reaching phase two, Thalamus will perform this attack. He shifts into a eye with a mouth around it, with swirling projectiles moving quickly towards the center of his eye, while shooting out omnidirectional projectiles. After this, ghostly enemies begin to form and fly towards Sorun, leaving bombs in their wake and dealing massive damage on contact.

Beat him on heroic with Ione Spear, a scythe and Fallen Angel's Thesis. Spear Rush always staggered him and dropped an invincibility orb. I only used the scythe for Death Watch to clear the screen when he summons a bunch of adds.

There is an easter egg with this boss. On the PC version, at the very least, during this boss the instance of deaths gambit that you have open will be called "DIE".
